Hi Susan. First of all, profuse apologies for the unforgiveable delay in replying to your comment - you must think me incredibly rude. How fascinating that you lived and worked in El Vacie. Everyone warned me not to go (especially my husband), but I was very curious. I was going to meet a woman who was allegedly the oldest woman in Spain, or Europe, as I remember, who was hoping to be rehoused with her family (daughter, granddaughter and great gd), but I don't know what happened to them, if they got their apartment - I never saw any more about it in the press. Anyway, it was quite an experience. I would love to talk to you about your experiences working with these disadvantaged people, and also to meet some of them one day. Please stay in contact. Best wishes, and apologies again.

Past research studies have confirmed the healthy benefits of consuming a traditional Mediterranean style diet. Researchers have demonstrated that this type of diet consisting of healthy quantities of extra virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, fruits and leafy greens and largely void of excess calories from animal protein is beneficial in the prevention of developing heart disease, diabetes, stroke and dementia. Mediterranean-style foods are packed with antioxidants that aid cellular function and polyphenol-rich olive oil, shown to lower systemic inflammation and risk from many chronic diseases.'

Hi John - thanks for visiting the blog. You have to take the medical every five years from 65 years old onwards, so that applies to over 70 too. Having said that, the rules seem to change, so it's always worth checking back with your local DGT office.

I applaud you for going into el vacie. It is notoriously lawless, but as you discovered, the people, and how they live, may surprise us. I have lived and worked with a group of gypsies in Seville, many of whom live in Las Tres Mil Viviendas (which is about as dangerous as el vacie). I learned a lot from them, and saw the positive side of people so often associated with crime. I look forward to being connected with you, and to future conversations on the trials and triumphs of living in Spain.

Luckily it's not bang in the middle of the city, but certainly close enough to tower uncomfortably over it. Will be interesting to see what people say once it's finished (not least UNESCO!!).
