The best fried fish in Spain is in… Andalucia!

September 13, 2012 – 11:53 am

Although it probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise, El Pais recently published a list of the restaurants serving the best pescaito frito (fried fish) in Spain, and nine out of ten were in Andalucia.

Pescaito frito is a mix of fish and seafood fried in light, crispy batter; its traditional home is Cadiz, but you can find it all over Andalucia.

It might include any of the following: calamares (squid), puntillitas (baby squid), cazon en adobo (marinated dogfish), boquerones (anchovies), salmonetes (small red mullet), merluza (hake), pijotas (baby hake), chanquetes (gobies), acedias (baby sole), and mero (grouper).

These are the nine Andalucian restaurants whose frituras (fry-ups) they recommend:

Alhucemas, Sanlucar la Mayor (Sevilla)

Merchan, San Pedro de Alcantara (Malaga)

Antonio, Zahara de los Atunes (Cadiz)

Los Marinos Jose, Fuengirola (Malaga)

El Campero, Barbate (Cadiz)

El Refectorium, Malaga

Los Diamantes, Granada

La Reserva 12, Malaga

Casa Balbino, Sanlucar de Barrameda (Cadiz)
