Here on the Costa Tropical they have been holding a four week course in the town hall to help tourism. It was aimed at business owners (small hotels/pensions, bars/restaurants etc.) to show them how to best serve clients. Unfortunately no business owners are there and only a mixture of about 15 people are attending who had previously worked as waiters etc. The materials have been great and my partner now has three good canvas bags to carry them around in.

Whilst the attempt to make the standard and quality of service is good at this moment the greater economic problems in europe need to pass before things will start to improve.

Jk’s in La Trocha are holding a street party this Sunday 7th. Featuring Costarock a superb rock ballad band! €5 euros entry to see the band very well worth it!

Hi Brenda,

Thanks for bringing the plight of ‘chiringuitos’ to our attention. We cherish memories of returning to Málaga from gloomy London and breaking our journey back to the Alpujarras with a chiringuito stop in La Herradura. To be dining on the beach hours after leaving Gatwick always seems magical!

Hi Brenda, this ‘TIA’ must surely be good news for many of our tourism-related small businesses here in the Alpujarras this year. Stand on any street corner and you can see them tightening their belts ready for the expected non-influx of UK and other non-Euro visitors.

I’m glad this information was picked up. Although I live near to Alfarnate I haven’t been to this festival. So many things happen in the summer months that it’s impossible to go to all of them. Maybe next year………..

Hi there Manicwind,

Well, I do believe there is a comprehensive guide - at least I’ve heard about it, but I don’t know if it is still in print.

Apparently a Spanish friend of mine’s grandfather has a sort of encyclopedia of all the place names in Spain that explained each name’s meaning and history. We’re trying to track that book down - trying to figure out exactly who inherited the book!

In the meantime, I plan to keep an eye on the Spanish book market to see if anything like that is available today.
