In 1559, King Felipe II gave these lands to the Marquis of Carpio, with the mandate to build the Castle of San Andrés. This was intended to defend coast from the Moors before the uprising of the Alpujarras. At that time, the hills surrounding the town were abundant in trees, so ovens were built to produce charcoal.

Declared a natural monument in 2003, the San Andrés island is 70,307m² and is made of volcanic rock. It is home to many seabirds and has a rich marine life around its shores. The island also has remains of a Moorish necropolis.

Sitting in a unique and spectacular environment, Carboneras is a perfect destination for nature lovers. Visitors can enjoy the views, or practice open-air sports including hiking or scuba diving. It is set within the Nature Reserve of Cabo de Gata-Níjar, one of the most arid protected areas in Europe and the only one in Andalusia with a coast, including Los Muertos beach.
