The story has it that when Julius Caesar visited the area surrounding this small town, he ordered the construction of the village due to the curative properties of the sulphurous and alkaline waters on a skin infection which had plagued him since childhood.

The small protected area of the Sierra Crestellina, of 478ha, is a limestone ridge rising to 926m at its highest point. It stretches for 4km north-south, immediately north of the village of Casares.

Located in the southwest part of Malaga province, the Sierra Bermeja is a mountain range with an average height of 1,000m (its highest point being 1,450m), covering 1,236ha. It is an area that has undergone major volcanic activity; the rocks are rich in the olivine mineral. Rainwater has oxidised the iron and magnesium present in the rocks and the iron oxide has coloured the rock reddish-ginger, a hue that gives the sierra its name.

Located on a headland on the coast between River Manilva and Playa de la Sal and the Arroyo Camarate and Playa de Piedra Paloma. All within in the small coastal strip of the municipality of Casares.

In the valley below Casares are the Roman Sulphur baths of Hedionda. The high sulphur content is due to a sulphur spring which flows from a limestone outcrop above the valley. It attracted the attention of the Romans 2000 years ago.

After one and a half kilometres west from Casares (MA-528) at the junction on the A-377 Manilva - Gaucin road a small track oposite can be seen. This was once the main route to Jimena de la Frontera and San Martin. Those who have no objection to a bumpy ride can still use it.

Head for Plaza de España the main square. The square has improved greatly in the last few years for the point of view of a tourist in that it now has pavement cafés which is most welcoming. The neoclasical four spout Carlos III fountain has brought fresh water to this village square since 1785 and sits in the centre.

East of Sabinillas village is the natural continuation of Playa Sabinillas. The Rio Manilva is the municipal boundary of the inland white village of Casares. The village only has a few km of Mediterranean boundary and beach.
