Casa de Puga

Casa de Puga tapas bar

Casa de Puga is a tapas institution in Almeria. The bar/restaurant on Calle Jovellanos (no 7), which opened in 1870, is deeply traditional in both decor and cuisine.

Originally the building was used for parking carriages downstairs, and as an inn upstairs. From 1900 it was owned by Don Juan Puga Antequera, who founded the current restaurant with his wife Maria Lopez Romero; his nephew Leonardo came to help him out, while also working as a builder.

Until 2015 Leonardo's two sons, Leonardo and Jose, were the proprietors (commemorative plaques dedicated to both men can be seen). The restaurant is no longer owned by the family.

The doors of Casa Puga have been crossed by endless figures from the world of culture, film, television and music, and also popular characters and people from the town.  Look out for the black and white photos on the wall, as well as paintings by Carlos Uhler, artist and friend of Leonardo Senior.

The most famous house specialities at Casa Puga include mojama (dried tuna) with almonds, lomo a la orza (pork with herbs) and bacon, date and cheese pie. They have a good selection of brandies and wines from Albuñol.
