Arco de la Rosa - Cadiz

Arco de la Rosa - Cadiz

Arco do la Rosa is another one of the entrances to the old town, it was named after the small chapel dedicated to the Virgen de la Rosa that was built above the arch.

Originally passing through the arch was made in a dog leg pattern, this was required because a tower was located right in front of the arch. it, now disappeared.

Above the arch, which was enlarged to allow the passage of carriages, a machicolation defends the entrance and from where boiling oil could be poured down onto invaders.

Some authors affirm that the current name of Arco de la Rosa could be due a family with this surname, who lived in a house next to the arch.
