Huelva City - Fascinating Fact 6

Operation Mincemeat

Within the  Nuestra Señora de la Soledad Cemetery in Huelva lies a grave with a curious history. The man buried there changed the course of the Second World War – even when he was already dead. Operation Mincemeat, which was made into a Netflix movie starring Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen, was an ingenious and complex operation involving the planting of false plans about Allied troop movements in Europe, designed to distract the Germans from the actual target. In April 1943, a corpse dressed as a British naval officer – in fact a homeless Welshman who had died in London - was found floating off the Huelva coast, and the plans in his briefcase were passed to the Germans, enabling a surprise attack on Sicily which was instrumental in the Allies’ eventual victory.
