Andalucia has one of the world's top courses

Valderrama in Sotogrande /sotogrande/home.htm, close to Gibraltar, is widely acknowledged as being one of the best courses in the world, and number one in continental Europe. It features over 2,000 ancient cork oak trees (alcornoques), carefully preserved by Robert Trent Jones when he designed the par-71 course in 1974; Seve Ballesteros redesigned the famously challenging 17th hole. Named after an ancient estate bought by Colonel Joe McMicking after World War II, Valderrama used to be called Sotogrande New, then Los Aves (the Birds). The Club was bought by a consortium headed by Greg Norman in 2010. The Club hosts the Volvo Masters, now called the Valderrama Masters, every November, as well as new tournament, the Andalucia Masters; first ever was held in October 2010.
