International Tourism Statistics for Andalucia

Official data by INE (National Statistics Institute, see table below) for 2023 recorded 12.2 million international arrivals to Andalucia, just overtaking the 12.02 million in 2019. This means that international tourism numbers in Andalucia returned to pre-pandemic levels in 2023, which is a hugely significant moment for the tourism industry here. 

World Tourism Statistics

The total world International tourist arrivals were to 764 million in 2004 up from 693m in 2001. Spain has dropped to the fourth most popular destination country in the world after France, USA and China after being second to France for many decades. Number of foreign tourists to Spain for 2001 to 2010 can be seen in the table below. A Tourist is defined as a visitor who stays at least one night and the purpose of travel is pleasure not business. Of the 52,677,187 foreign tourists to come to Spain in 2010, this is the method of transport elected.

According to the municipal redister (padron) the population of Andalucia on the 1st January 2012 is 8,437,000. This is provisional estimate. There was a large construction boom in Andalucia from 2000 to 2007. This can be seen from the number of new housing units built according to the Ministry of Public Works.

Airport Statistics

Malaga is by far the dominant airport. All the airports increased their passenger movements up to 2007. All except Malaga have seen reduced passenger movements since then.

Málaga Airport is the fourth most important airport in Spain after Madrid, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca. It is the top international airport in the south of Spain, handling 85% of the international air traffic in Andalucia.
