Torreblascopedro

Torreblascopedro

Torreblascopedro’s Campillo del Río district produces more asparagus than any other area in the entire province of Jaén. The municipality also boasts a proud olive-growing tradition. It has about 2,400 inhabitants.

History

The first reliable references to the town date back to the eighteenth century, when the municipality is mentioned in maps and books outlining the term of Baeza. The oldest known construction dates to 1714, the year that is referenced in a trapezoidal molding of the heraldic shield, which is still preserved today. In the eighteenth century, the community was composed of a series of scattered farmhouses who profited from the rich cattle pastures. The exact name of the town at this time is unclear, appearing diversely as Torre de Blasco Pedro, Torre de Velasco and Blascopedro, among others. More>

Things to see

Ayuntamiento
The original Torreblascopedro Town Hall, built in 1971, had an undoubtedly domestic style of architecture. However, this has since been demolished and is in the process of being rebuilt. The local library and House of Culture meanwhile house municipal administration. (Location)

Boulevards
The urban landscape of Torreblascopedro is firmly in the style of a modern city, especially its wide streets or boulevards. That which runs past the Town Hall features family homes with wide façades, regularized openings and a formal, gentrified character. Numbers 42 and 44 are considered of particular interest, the latter with baroque shields from the seventeenth century. (Location)

Iglesia Parroquial de San José
The church is the most outstanding building in the municipality, built with masonry in the second half of the twentieth century. Its most interesting element is the neo-Baroque altarpiece, made of painted and gilt wood, also dating from the twentieth century, the work of the sculptor and image maker Palma Burgos. The images exhibited inside correspond iconographically to San José, the Inmaculada Concepción and the Sagrado Corazón. (Location)

Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Francisco Fernández
The Interpretation Centre exhibits the constantly changing world of experimental arts. The exhibitions are temporary and changed roughly every month, and always feature work by artists of great national and international importance. There is also a room dedicated to the photographer Francisco Fernández, containing over 500 of his works. Fernández is a prestigious professor and photographer born in Torreblascopedro in 1945. (Location)

Centro Gudalinfo
Guadalinfo is a network of public internet access centres, in which the Junta de Andalucía, Provincial Councils and Town Councils participate. The project aims to mobilize the 636 Andalusian municipalities with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants towards the Information Society. The centres have free broadband internet access with state-of-the-art computer equipment; workshops are carried out to promote basic digital literacy and break the digital divide. (Location)

Things to see outside the town

Iglesia de San Isidro
The church is typical of post-Spanish Civil War colonial architecture, built in 1953, directed by Jesús Ayuso. The exterior walls are whitewashed, although those of the presbytery area feature exposed brick. It is surrounded by gardens and has a complex of complimentary services for parish use. It has buttresses, better to support the building since it is located on lose ground that progressively causes cracks, which constitutes a threat to the integrity and future of the building as a whole. Located in Campillo del Río.
