Antiguas Carnicerías

Antiguas Carnicerías / Old Butchers

The old butchers building was both a butchers and Municipal slaughterhouse. The original building was built in 1547 during the reign of Charles V and was located outside the city walls. In the 1960s it was rebuilt in the newly reformed Plaza del Pópulo. As the original building was longer than the new Plaza de Pópulo the ends were "folded" back to the sides.

Today the building consists of two sections. In the lower there is a linteled door and three windows, on the right a coat of arms of the corregidor, and on the left the coat of arms of Baeza. The upper section features set back windows between square pillars and in the centre the coat of arms of Carlos V.

The Municipal butcher's had a slaughterhouse on the ground floor and a retail space on the upper floor. In those days locals would bring their livestock to be slaughtered.

The use of the building have changed over the years from the municipal butchers / slaughter house, leather dryer, municipal archive, municipal museum. At present it is the seat of the law courts.
